Plenty-Coups: Chief of the Crows
Published in Paperback by Bison Bks Corp (November, 2002)
Authors: Frank B. Linderman, Plenty, and Barney Old Coyote
Average review score:

Easy reading and very educational
a must for anyone who will be visiting Montana's Indian territory. It not only describes the lifestyle of Indian Tribes, but also how modern times took away that lifestyle during that era.

An inspiring read!
To put it bluntly, this book changed my life! I found the old chief's stories mesmerizing and this has inspired a life-long interest in Native American culture and its preservation. The story is well written and easily followed. I first read this book at about age 10, and still find it stirring now, at age 37. A MUST READ for folks wanting to know more about the plight and past of the Crow.

A fantastic read!
One of the best books I've ever read. Plenty Coups recounts his life growing up in the Crow tribe during the 1800's. Beautiful. Mystical. Heroic. It's an easy read but will keep everyone from 10 to 100 spellbound.

Size of a Man's Wallet, Good Translation
The size is perfect, the print is crisp and clear, and the zipper keeps it sealed up and safe. Pefect to take in your pocket on a walk or a sunset over the lake. Just be careful not lose it... like I have, twice... :-p

a neat little package
nice, small, readable - what more could I want?

New American Standard
Contrary to what the last review says, this Bible is not a King James Version with a snap flap. It is a nice looking black bonded-leather NASB. Does not snap closed, which is alright because people need to keep their Bibles open.

The Portuguese Columbus: Secret Agent of King John II
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (June, 1992)
Authors: Mascarenhas Barreto, Reginald A. Brown, and Maxcarenhas Barreto
Average review score:

The truth milord, the truth only.
There are really no adequate adjectives to label this work. This breakthrough work of art is a fantastic challenge to all historians that ever dared to whisper the word Columbus in their thoughts. It is obvious that the so-called professional historian community is not going to like what Barreto explains with extraordinary detail because they would only be achknowledging their own ignorance. There is a multibillion dollar industry living under the myth of a Genoese Columbus and offering false documents to prove it. There are books based on those false documents written by people with "a name" in the historian community begging the public to perpetuate the lie because in all honesty, they can't sleep at night with their hard pillow filled with corrupted cash. To date no historian has successfully challenged Mr. Barreto's arguments. Why? I tell you why. Because Mr. Barreto is most probably right and all those Samuel Morisons out there will die first before they admit to it.

Intrigue, adventure, politics, & history. An amazing book!
The amazing investigative work of Barreto proves Columbus was (1) a spy, (2) Portuguese (NOT Italian), and (3) JEWISH! Barreto breaks the secret code of Columbus' signature and exposes the explorer's covert life. The book is filled with history, adventure, politics, and intrigue. THE MISSION: To foil Spain's quest for India. THE REWARD: Discovery of a New World and Portugal's rise as a global power. The author examines the circumstances which led to the oppression of Jews in Europe, and how this forced secrecy gave Columbus the opportunity to become one of the greatest covert agents in history. The discoveries in this book are so astounding, one wonders why this book is not getting greater attention. This book is intensely satisfying. The amount of information in the book is so vast, you have to read it more than once; but you'll love every minute of it!

Columbus' history rewritten
I found the theses presented in this book fascinating and very thoroughly argued. Much of the evidence is very convincing. Some has been available before, but a great deal is new, specially the part on decyphering the cabalistic signature. I am puzzled by the lack of response from the history experts.

The Precise Parallel New Testament: Greek Text, King James Version, Rheims New Testament, Amplified Bible, New International Version, New Revised Standard Version, New American Bible
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (April, 1995)
Author: John R. Kohlenberger
Average review score:

Excellent for Close Study
This is a great tool for students of the Greek New Testament.
If you are a pastor and your Greek skills are falling away
this is a very good book to add to your library. The Greek
NT is included along with some historic "literal" or formal
equivalent translations. I do not agree with the choice of the
Amplified Bible, but that does not detract from the usefulness
of this resource. I find myself pulling it off the shelf when
I am preparing sermons. Another tool for preachers that is
highly recommended.

This is the best and most beautifully designed
parallel Bible ever published. 5-PLUS.

Kevin McGowin

Perfect For Beginning GReek Students
As a student of Beginning New Testament Greek, this book was invaluable to my learning by being able to compare the Great Translations of both old time and new time. Having this is in my collection often eliminated the need for a lexicon in the preparation of word studies and has been a continuing help in my work in the Greek Language.

Quanah Parker, Comanche Chief
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (June, 1993)
Average review score:

Interesting Comanchie Chief
Our classroom read a poignant short story about his mother, Cynthia Ann Parker. I was pleased to find this book on the life of her son in this carefully researched, well-presented biography. It is an interesting read of a man and also a chief showing how he is torn between two worlds of belief and behaviors. Informative read. It received the Oklahoma History Book of the Year award.

A Man of Two Worlds: Quanah Parker
This past summer, I made a trip to the reconstruction of Old Fort Parker in Groesbeck, TX - and the actual massacre site - where Cynthia Ann Parker, age 9, was captured by Comanche warriors and raised as a Comanche woman for the next 25 years before a well-meaning Texas Ranger discovered her and returned her to her white relatives. Cynthia Ann never readjusted to white society and, in mourning for her Comanche husband and her children, eventually starved herself to death. Yet, out of this tragic story, her son Quanah - half white, half Comanche - rose to become the most influential representative of the Comanche tribe and the last Comanche Chief.

In this book, author William T. Hagan presents the meticulously researched story of Quanah's life and the politics of both the white and native worlds which he straddled, serving as an eloquent bridge between two societies struggling for survival on the Oklahoma and Texas plains. An astute businessman, Quanah recognized the futility of staving off white settlement and turned his warrior energies toward negotiating for the best "deals" he could get for the American Indians. Although he made many trips to Washington, DC and the White House to represent the needs of the Indians and often wore western Anglo dress, he refused to give up his braids, his "much married condition" (7 wives), and his dedication to the peyote cult.

This is a fascinating book which I highly recommend to any afficianado of the Old West and Native America.

Good, In-Depth Look at a Great Man
Although I tend to be wary of any biographies that speak with an omnisient narrative voice, and don't cite their sources as they go, Hagan's book does well remaining mostly unbiased in discussing native-white relations, and stating facts. It has an excellent collection of pictures I haven't seen elsewhere, and gives a well-written account of Quanah Parker's life without 'juicing it up'. Being a descendent of Quanah Parker, I've read anything about him I can get my hands on, and this is definitely one of the better resources.

The Raven's Moon
Published in Paperback by Topaz (February, 1997)
Author: Susan King
Average review score:

THIS ONE'S A KEEPER!
This is the first book I read of Susan King's and I must say that I'm thrilled with this author's way of story telling that keeps you glued to the tale until the last page.

From the first page, you would be gripped by the excitement and suspense and the imminent danger threatening Mhairi, her brother Iain and the hero, Rowan Scott. This is a relentlessly fast paced tale with twists and turns, danger and romance with no frivolity common in other romances.

Highly recommended to readers who love a "more" serious kind of romance.

Mystical and lyrical!
Susan King is a real voice in historical romance. I loved this book, and found it compelling. She is on my "A" list of authors!

If you love Scottish historical romances - this is a must!
Susan King has a wonderful touch! She takes you to Scotland in this book and makes you believe that you can really feel the cold wind, and see the mist on the ground. Mhairi and Rowan are characters that you will never forget as they discover a love that makes you smile and sometimes makes your heart ache a little bit.

Besides the wonderful storyline, it is also refreshing to have injuries that actually cause the characters pain and a little healing time. However, by far the best part about this novel is the incredible realistic and accurate Scottish history that you learn without even realizing it!! You will really enjoy this tale!

The Returning King: A Guide to the Book of Revelation
Published in Paperback by P & R Press (November, 2000)
Author: Vern S. Poythress
Average review score:

The Book of Revelation Made Slightly Less Difficult
A few years ago I heard a speaker who began his talk by saying that he loved the book of Revelation because it was so simple and clear and it so neatly summed up the teaching of the Bible. I laughed because everyone knows that the book of Revelation is anything but simple and clear. He said he was serious and he mentioned that he had studied Revelation under Vern Poythress at Westminster Seminary and he had made it seem clear and simple.

At the time this book had not been published but I was able to get some tapes by Poythress, and they taught what is written in this book. When the book came out I got it right away and I have to say that I was not disappointed in the tapes or in this book.

Poythress writes like a kindly, wise elder. I say he is kind because, though he takes a position on the interpretation of the book, he is gracious to those who disagree with him. One of the things I particularly liked about this book is his discussion of how to outline the book. He listed a few different ways that this could be outlined, but rather than attacking various positions he affirmed that the existence of these differing views should cause us to marvel at the greatness of God in the book. These things show that the book of Revelation is like a giant tapestry, with many colors and patterns weaving in and out. The book is so rich that one can never tire of admiring the beauties of God in it.

As to his position, Poythress says that the book follows the pattern of recapitulation - it describes the same historical events over and over again using different metaphors and pictures. So, rather than being a straight chronological description of the end time, the book of Revelation describes the second coming, and the events surrounding it, several times.

Poythress shows that the book of Revelation is actually comprised of several cycles of judgment. He gives the tools for understanding how to identify these cycles and in doing so makes Revelation slightly less difficult.

This is the place to start in understanding the book of Revelation.

Great Introduction to Revelation
The Returning King is a great introduction the book of Revelation. The first 50 pages or so contain high level discussions on the various views of Revelation (idealist, futurist, preterist, historicist) as well as other controversial aspects such as the millennium (premil, postmil, amil). This survey of all the major viewpoints alone is worth the price of the book. The rest of book is a high level discussion of the text. Poythress takes an idealist, amil view but provides a very fair discussion of all the other viewpoints.

It was written as an introduction and is very successful as such. It is not a thorough commentary of Revelation. If you have never studied Revelation this is a great place to start.

Concise Conservative Amil Overview of Revelation
Written by a first class scholar on biblical interpretation, The Returning King gives us more vintage Poythress. After many years of teaching this book for students at Westminster Theological Seminary (I was one of them), we now get the benefits in a form we can use in our own ministries and teaching! This book is a great, practical, and well-written introduction to the consecutive chapters of Revelation, suitable for pastors who want the basic themes, a Sunday School class, or college & seminary students. You will be able to grasp the main themes and contrasts and develop a sane appreciation for Revelation from a humble teacher who can appreciate other perspectives, yet still convince you of the value of his own interpretation. Of particular interest are Poythress's insights on how the dragon, beast, false prophet and harlot counterfeit & image the Trinity and the church respectively. This book will stimulate you to read and appreciate Revelation as a "picture book," not a confusing puzzle book. For a detailed verse by verse view in the same interpretive framework (recapitulationist/multiple fulfillment view of Revelation) see G.K. Beale's NIGTC The Book of Revelation at a thorough 1245 pages--a commentary which Poythress recommends in The Returning King.

Richer Than King Tut : The Mental Game of Wealth & Prosperity
Published in Hardcover by World Prosperity Publishing (29 December, 2000)
Author: Lela Hayes
Average review score:

A very profound book that voices a simple truth
Richer Than King Tut: The Mental Game Of Wealth & Prosperity by financial planner Lela Hayes is a deeply insightful book about what it truly means to be wealthy and prosperous. Hayes deftly explains that the importance of true prosperity is not merely the accumulation of financial security, but also self-respect and acceptance to allow oneself to relax and enjoy the wealth that one has earned. A very profound book that voices a simple truth in direct language for the non-specialist general reader, Richer Than King Tut is very highly recommended reading for anyone wanting not only to earn a good living, but to be able to enjoy a good life based on the results of their hard work and financial planning.

A New Paradigm of Prosperity
Prosperity means many things to many people. Lela Hayes, in this beautifully insightful book, invites us to step into a new paradigm where prosperity and compassion go together, where abundance for one supports abundance for all, and where our inner beliefs and visions directly create our outer realities.

Lela invites us to get in touch with our essential selves, examine deeply held core beliefs around purpose and mission in life, and then from the deepest center of our being, move towards magnetizing prosperity and abundance into our lives on personal as well as planetary levels.

Prosperity is not an end in itself; it is the means to a greater end. Are we choosing to play small, or are we willing to truly make a difference in the world? This manual will serve as a wake-up call for those of us who are ready to stop being spectators and become powerful players in the great game of life.

Have a Magnificent Life!
To dare to imagine our ideal life is what the author encourages, or rather empowers us to do in this book. 'Richer than King Tut' is a roadmap through the mental game most of us play daily. "True prosperity" says Lela Hayes, " is having all aspects of your life in magnificent balance". 'Magnificent' is such an up-lifting word and that theme is carried throughout this book. Imagination coupled with commitment is essential to our ideal life, according to the author. She speaks of motivation, choice, intention and the tools to unleash the creativity that's in all of us. Over and over again we are led back to the present moment, where all of those qualities live and ideally, so must we. Wealth/money, is seen as a by-product of the process. In the end of course, it's not about the money, it's about the effect we have on the people/world around us through whatever means we choose. These are ideas that speak to the heart and the gut. You may have heard some of it before but probably not like this. Reading this book is like have a personal life coach. Key ideas are already underlined in the text, which I found especially helpful. There are examples, exercises and solutions- this book is a call to action!

Royal Winton Porcelain: Ceramics Fit for a King
Published in Paperback by The Glass Press, Inc., dba Antique Publications (May, 1998)
Author: Eileen Rose Busby
Average review score:

Great book.
This book is the most definitive book yet to come out on Royal Winton. A bonus is the history it includes as well as the pricing. I use it as a reference book.

Enjoyable & educational
I enjoyed reading about the history of the Royal Winton family and its pottery factory in Stoke-On-Trent. I have been a collector of chintz and the insight that this book gave me really enhanced my collecting.

A very informative book.

Not just a collectors' book, but an in depth history.
From the early historical photos to the images of today's Royal Winton, the book is a must-read trip back in time. So many collectors' books read more like catalogs than books. This one is a refreshing change. The author traveled to England and found an elderly couple, once residents of Staffordshire, who actually grew up in the potteries. They recalled in the book what it was like then, as children, surrounded by The Potteries. The book is full of color, and not just in the photos, but in the enormous importance the porecelain played in the common lives of the potters and in the royal lives of the King and Queen. The writer takes you inside The Potteries and shows you how the ceramics were made and explains why certain patterns were done the way they were. A must-read for not just collectors but historians too.
